The Detroit Red Wings aim to extend their winning streak to five games as they face the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday night. This game marks the first of a weekend back-to-back set, with the Red Wings scheduled to play against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Sunday.
Ben Chiarot of the Red Wings commented on the demanding schedule, stating, "It's part of the grind of the season. I think we just embrace it, honestly, and look forward to it. It's a good challenge for us."
Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan highlighted the team's off-ice resources designed to help manage their busy schedule. "We, like 31 other teams in the League, employ real good people," McLellan said. He emphasized that while there are times when coaching decisions override these resources, this trip is unlikely to be one of those instances.
In their previous game, Detroit overcame a 2-0 deficit against the Edmonton Oilers and secured a 3-2 shootout victory. Alex Lyon played a key role with a season-high 45 saves. Reflecting on that match, Chiarot noted, "In Edmonton, we had a slow start but were able to kind of find our game as it went on."
McLellan confirmed that Cam Talbot will start as goalie in Calgary without any changes from Thursday's lineup. Speaking about Talbot's performance, McLellan said, "He's real steady... His game-management skills help us out a lot."
Calgary holds the Western Conference’s second wild-card spot after defeating Anaheim Ducks 4-1 on Thursday. New acquisitions Morgan Frost and Joel Farabee are expected to debut for Calgary against Detroit.
Jonathan Huberdeau leads Calgary in goals and points this season. The Flames' goalies Dustin Wolf and Dan Vladar have combined for notable statistics this season.
The Red Wings previously defeated Calgary 2-1 in overtime earlier this season and are looking for another win in this matchup.
Chiarot concluded by saying, “We just worry about what we’re doing... Starting fast, getting ahead early.”
