The Detroit Red Wings faced a setback on their road trip, losing 4-1 to the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center. This marks their second consecutive defeat away from home.
J.T. Compher commented on the opposition, saying, “That’s a good team over there. I thought they had good intensity to start the game, and we made a few mistakes that gave them a little bit of life." Despite efforts in the latter periods, Compher noted that early errors against strong teams can be costly.
Red Wings' goalie Alex Lyon recorded 22 saves during the game, while Jake Oettinger of the Stars stopped 33 shots. Detroit head coach Todd McLellan expressed concern over defensive errors: “Some real egregious errors by individuals again, and the whole group pays the price for them.”
Dallas took an early lead with Matej Blumel scoring off a rebound at 5:26 in the first period. The Stars extended their lead with goals from Jason Robertson and Mavrik Bourque within just over a minute apart midway through the first period.
McLellan remarked on these events stating, “The tough thing for me is the start [of Sunday’s game] wasn’t that bad except for some individual errors.” Despite outshooting Dallas in a scoreless second period, Detroit's efforts were not enough to close the gap.
Marco Kasper managed to score for Detroit in the third period with assists from Simon Edvinsson and Dylan Larkin. Kasper has been productive recently with seven points in his last six games.
However, Wyatt Johnston sealed Dallas' victory with another goal at 14:09 of the third period.
Reflecting on Lyon's performance and team mindset after spotting Dallas an early advantage, he said: “It’s difficult when you spot them a few... We just got to keep that moment-by-moment mentality and continue to try to improve.”
The Red Wings will next face off against the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.
Coach McLellan spoke about ongoing learning experiences with his team: "We’re learning a lot about the group from Day 1... Players are beginning to react differently with errors and frustration."
Compher also discussed challenges faced against strong goaltending like Oettinger's influence: "Two nights in a row, two really good goalies... Obviously not enough.”
Looking ahead, Compher remains focused on improvement before facing Philadelphia: "We knew we were going to play some good teams on this road trip... That’s what we got to do."
Lyon emphasized maintaining focus amidst challenging games: “On a road trip you’re playing good teams every night so you just can’t take anything for granted.”
