The Detroit Red Wings faced a tough defeat against the Tampa Bay Lightning, losing 5-1 at AMALIE Arena. With another game scheduled against the Dallas Stars in less than 24 hours, the Red Wings are keen to move on quickly from this loss.
“Obviously, learn from this one,” stated Patrick Kane. “I’m sure we’ll go over some things, and got to get right back at it tomorrow. I guess that’s the best part about it, right? You get another chance tomorrow.”
Cam Talbot was in goal for Detroit, making 11 saves before being replaced by Alex Lyon, who stopped all six shots he faced in the final period. For Tampa Bay, Andrei Vasilevskiy made 39 saves.
Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan remarked on his team's performance: “I thought we were in position a lot of times to prevent, and we just didn’t do our work. Say you’re at your desk, but you’re not working. Then, you’re useless. It’s one thing being there. It’s the other thing getting the job done, and we didn’t do it.”
Brayden Point opened scoring for Tampa Bay just over two minutes into the game with a rebound shot. Lucas Raymond commented on this early setback: “That kind of set the tone for us,” adding that defense is crucial to their game.
Despite having two power-play opportunities in the first period, Detroit failed to capitalize but outshot Tampa Bay 13-6. The Lightning extended their lead significantly in the second period with goals from Jake Guentzel, Nikita Kucherov, and Mitchell Chaffee.
“They scored on their opportunities,” McLellan said about Tampa's performance during this period.
Raymond managed to score for Detroit with a power-play goal assisted by Kane and Moritz Seider midway through the second period. However, Darren Raddysh added another goal for Tampa Bay shortly after.
The final period saw no change in scoreline as both teams played defensively.
Reflecting on his team’s shooting strategy, McLellan noted: “We want to be a volume-shooting team...but we had zero presence in and around their net.”
Postgame comments highlighted areas needing improvement before facing Dallas. McLellan discussed goalie changes saying they aimed to give Alex Lyon some playtime ahead of Sunday’s match.
Kane expressed disappointment over missed power-play chances while acknowledging Tampa Bay's defensive efforts: “We shot a lot of pucks at the net and their goalie made some good saves.”
Raymond also reflected on special teams' struggles stating: “Not good enough of the power play."
Looking forward to Sunday’s game against Dallas Stars gives them an opportunity for redemption according to Raymond: "Good thing we got a new chance tomorrow."
