TAMPA BAY -- The Detroit Red Wings are set to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in an Atlantic Division matchup at AMALIE Arena on Saturday night. This will be the first meeting of the season between the two teams, with the Red Wings holding a record of 21-19-4 and 46 points, while the Lightning stand at 24-16-3 with 51 points. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. puck drop and will be broadcast on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit and WWJ Newsradio 950.
The Red Wings began their four-game road trip with a victory over the Florida Panthers, winning 5-3 thanks to three power-play goals. Dylan Larkin led his team by scoring two goals and providing an assist, marking his first three-point game of the season. Goalie Cam Talbot contributed significantly with 41 saves.
Detroit's head coach Todd McLellan commented on his team's performance against last year's Stanley Cup champions and their resilience since he took charge. "There’s always going to be setbacks," McLellan said. "There’s no such thing as a perfect group or player, but the challenges they’ve accepted and have tried to apply themselves."
The Lightning are third in the Atlantic Division and recently secured a shootout win against the Anaheim Ducks, improving their recent record to 3-1-1. Nikita Kucherov is leading Tampa Bay's offense with a seven-game, 11-point streak, placing him third in NHL scoring this season with 65 points.
Simon Edvinsson of Detroit noted that Tampa Bay has skilled players like Victor Hedman who he admired growing up. Edvinsson expressed excitement about playing against Hedman again: “I took some stuff from guys that I really like,” Edvinsson said.
Both teams are preparing for what promises to be an intense game as they vie for crucial division points.
