The Detroit Red Wings secured a 5-2 victory against the Florida Panthers, marking a strong start to their four-game road trip. The game, held at Amerant Bank Arena, saw the Red Wings capitalize on three power-play goals.
Red Wings head coach Todd McLellan commented on the team's performance: “We found a way to scrap our way to a win. It wasn’t pretty. We needed some board work, blocked shots and whistles, but it’s a good learning experience for our group.”
Goalie Cam Talbot contributed significantly with 41 saves, earning his 11th win of the season. Talbot remarked on the challenge: “That’s a veteran group coming off a win. They know how to win, especially in this building. I give our guys a ton of credit."
Jonatan Berggren opened the scoring for Detroit with his seventh goal of the season during an early power play. Florida's Anton Lundell quickly responded by tying the game at 1-1.
Detroit regained momentum in the second period when Alex DeBrincat assisted Patrick Kane, who set up Dylan Larkin for his first goal of the night, making it 2-1. Evan Rodrigues tied it again before Kane scored another power-play goal.
McLellan praised Detroit's power play unit: “It is very well connected... When it’s not going well, one of the most impressive things is how they go get pucks back.”
Marco Kasper extended Detroit's lead to 4-2 in the second period before Larkin sealed the victory with an empty-netter in the third period.
Reflecting on their strategy moving forward, Larkin said: “We’ve set a standard for how we need to play... Tampa is always a good challenge.”
The Red Wings will face off against Tampa Bay Lightning next at Amalie Arena.
