DETROIT -- Axel Sandin-Pellikka, a prospect for the Detroit Red Wings, recently represented Team Sweden at the 2025 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship. Despite not securing a medal, Sandin-Pellikka expressed pride in playing for his country.
“I try to put in a lot of pride, for all the people that are watching at home,” Sandin-Pellikka stated. He emphasized the importance of inspiring young fans who watch and then play street hockey. “Inspiring other people to get better and representing the country is awesome, so it’s a lot of fun.”
Sandin-Pellikka captained Sweden during the tournament held in Ottawa from December 26 to January 5. He recorded ten points over seven games and was recognized as WJC’s Best Defenseman for the second consecutive year.
“It’s an honor getting that [WJC Best Defenseman award] with all the other good D’s that were in the tournament,” he said. However, he admitted he would trade this accolade for a medal if possible.
Sweden finished fourth after losing to Team Czechia in a shootout during the bronze-medal game. Sandin-Pellikka is now back with Skellefteå AIK in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL), where he aims to improve his defensive skills while maintaining his offensive performance.
“I’m trying to get stronger all the time because [the NHL] is going to be a tougher league when I try to make the jump,” he noted.
In 27 games with Skellefteå AIK this season, Sandin-Pellikka has accumulated 22 points, leading among U-26 defensemen in SHL scoring. As of Tuesday, Skellefteå AIK ranked seventh in SHL standings.
“We’re doing good things overall and going to get better and better,” Sandin-Pellikka commented on his team's progress.
Drafted by Detroit as their second first-round pick in 2023, Sandin-Pellikka has also been building rapport with fellow Red Wings prospect Michael Brandsegg-Nygård at Skellefteå AIK.
“He uses his size very well,” said Sandin-Pellikka about Brandsegg-Nygård. “He’s an awesome, strong player.”
Sandin-Pellikka credits much of his development to guidance from Detroit's European Scouting and Player Development staff. “I speak with [Niklas] Kronwall,” he mentioned regarding post-game discussions aimed at improving his play.
Off-ice activities include enjoying nature and fishing with friends and teammates like Luke Witkowski. “I love fishing...that’s one thing," shared Sandin-Pellikka about spending time outdoors during off-seasons.
