Red Wings recall Ville Husso amid Jeff Petry's injury

The Detroit Red Wings have recalled goaltender Ville Husso from the Grand Rapids Griffins under emergency conditions. This move coincides with the placement of defenseman Jeff Petry on injured reserve, effective from January 2.

Ville Husso, 29, has participated in eight games for the Red Wings during the current season, achieving a record of 1-4-2. His goals-against average stands at 3.47, with a save percentage of 0.877. In contrast, his performance with the Griffins has been more successful, recording a 6-1-0 record, a goals-against average of 1.86, and a save percentage of 0.935 across eight appearances this season.

Husso's previous season saw him limited to 19 appearances with Detroit where he posted a record of 9-5-2 and achieved a goals-against average of 3.55 alongside an 0.892 save percentage. Notably, he delivered an impressive performance against the Belleville Senators on January 26, stopping all shots during his conditioning stint.

Originally drafted by the St. Louis Blues in the fourth round (94th overall) in the NHL Entry Draft of 2014, Husso has accumulated significant experience since joining North American leagues in 2020-21. His NHL career includes a total record of 70-44-18 across appearances with both the Blues and Red Wings.

In addition to his NHL experience, Husso has played extensively in the AHL with teams such as Chicago Wolves and San Antonio Rampage before joining Grand Rapids Griffins where he earned recognition on the AHL All-Rookie Team during the 2017-18 season.

Hailing from Helsinki, Finland, Husso spent three seasons playing for HIFK in Finland's SM-Liiga before moving to North America. During his final year there in the 2015-16 campaign, he was named to SM-Liiga’s All-Star Team and received accolades as top goaltender after leading statistics for goals-against average and save percentage.

On an international level representing Finland at various tournaments including IIHF World Championships and Junior Championships; notable achievements include winning gold at IIHF World Junior Championship in year twenty fourteen among others.
