The Detroit Red Wings secured a 3-2 overtime victory against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday night at Little Caesars Arena. This win marked their fifth consecutive victory, maintaining their momentum as one of the NHL's leading teams this season.
Joe Veleno commented on the importance of divisional wins, stating, “Anytime you can get some wins, especially against divisional opponents, it’s huge for a team.” He emphasized the team's strong performance and approach to each game with a consistent mentality.
With this win, Detroit moved back to an even record of 18-18-4. Head coach Todd McLellan expressed that reaching .500 is just a stepping stone. “I did tell the players to quit worrying about wins and losses... Just play the game," he said.
The game began with intensity when Senators captain Brady Tkachuk received a roughing penalty early in the first period. This led to Dylan Larkin scoring on a power play for Detroit. His goal tied him with Alex DeBrincat for the team lead in goals, while DeBrincat also reached his 100th career NHL point with Detroit.
Patrick Kane praised Detroit's recent success in power plays: “Every time we go out there, we feel like we can score.”
Goalie Alex Lyon stopped all shots in the first period but was replaced by Cam Talbot due to an injury. Talbot made significant saves throughout the rest of the match.
Ottawa tied and then took the lead during the second period through Thomas Chabot and Tkachuk's efforts. However, Veleno equalized for Detroit early in the third period before Kane clinched victory in overtime.
Reflecting on his game-winning goal during his bobblehead night, Kane remarked on creating opportunities in overtime: "No matter what happens [in overtime], I think you have the chance to get the puck and create."
The Red Wings will aim to extend their winning streak when they face off against Chicago Blackhawks next Friday at home.
