Detroit City Football Club has announced the extension of defender Matt Sheldon's contract for another year. The agreement will keep Sheldon with the team for the 2025 USL Championship season. Sheldon joined Detroit City FC through a transfer from Hartford Athletic before the start of the 2024 season.
During his first season with Detroit City FC, Sheldon played in 29 league matches, accumulating 1,179 minutes on the field. He achieved a milestone by surpassing 150 total USL Championship appearances when he came on as a substitute against Indy Eleven early in the season.
Sheldon started in 12 league games and contributed both offensively and defensively. He scored a goal during an away match against Louisville City FC and provided an assist in a game against San Antonio FC. His defensive statistics include winning an average of 7.65 duels per 90 minutes, making 1.72 tackles per 90 minutes, and winning 61.5% of his aerial duels.
Before joining Detroit City FC, Sheldon played for Hartford Athletic and had previous stints with Charleston Battery and FC Tulsa, spending three seasons with Tulsa.
