In their second-to-last game of the year, the Detroit Red Wings will face the Washington Capitals at Little Caesars Arena on Sunday evening. The game is scheduled to start at 5 p.m., with coverage available on FanDuel Sports Network Detroit and the Red Wings Radio Network.

The Red Wings, holding a record of 13-18-4, are looking to recover from a recent loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs. This was Todd McLellan's first game as head coach of the team, which ended in a 5-2 defeat. Despite trailing significantly, Detroit managed two goals in quick succession during the third period but ultimately lost their fourth consecutive game.

After conducting his first official practice with the team, McLellan expressed his intention to quickly familiarize himself with both players and coaching staff. "The situation, like I said [after Friday’s game] is brand new for me," McLellan stated. He emphasized learning and adapting rapidly without overwhelming the team.

Players such as Patrick Kane appreciated Saturday's practice structure and pace. Kane remarked, "Really good pace," noting that it felt akin to starting a new training camp under a fresh coach.

McLellan likened Saturday's session to an NHL Training Camp beginning due to its intensity and preparation demands. He praised the video staff for their swift work in preparing for meetings despite time constraints.

Goalie Cam Talbot shared insights into McLellan's approach: "That’s what we’re all going to do from here on out," he said about working hard and adapting gradually under new leadership.

The Capitals are entering Sunday's match after defeating the Maple Leafs 5-2. Captain Alex Ovechkin returned from injury in this victory, contributing a goal after recovering from a fractured fibula sustained on November 18th.

Washington stands second in the Metropolitan Division with Dylan Strome leading in points this season. Goaltenders Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren have maintained solid performance metrics so far.

Talbot spoke positively about McLellan's potential impact on turning around team fortunes: "I know what [McLellan] brings to the table," he said confidently about future improvements under new guidance.
