Torres, who has been an All-Star twice, spent seven years with the New York Yankees. In 2024, he achieved a batting line of .257/.330/.378 with 15 home runs, 63 RBIs, and 26 doubles. His performance improved significantly in the latter half of the season, where he ranked among the top American League hitters in several categories: batting average (.292), on-base percentage (.361), and walk-to-strikeout ratio (1.72). Post-All-Star break, he recorded a weighted runs created plus (wRC+) of 124 over 61 games.
Throughout his career, Torres has maintained a .265/.334/.441 slash line with 138 home runs and 441 RBIs. He has surpassed a Baseball-Reference Wins Above Replacement (bWAR) of at least 2.9 in four seasons. His career-best bWAR was recorded in 2022 at 4.0 when he hit .761 OPS with 24 homers and drove in 76 runs over the course of 140 games. In another standout year, Torres hit a personal best of 38 home runs and accumulated 90 RBIs in the year 2019.
Known for his consistency as an everyday player, Torres excels against left-handed pitchers. Since his debut in Major League Baseball in 2018, he ranks high among American League hitters for home run rate and OPS against southpaws. At age 28, Torres is recognized for his durability; since the start of his MLB career in that same year, he ranks within the top players for games played and plate appearances.
During his tenure with the Yankees, Torres gained extensive postseason experience—missing out on playoff action only once during six years. Over this period comprising multiple postseason appearances totaling up to nearly two hundred plate appearances—he posted an OPS of .795 along with seven homers and twenty-five RBIs while demonstrating excellent strike zone control.
Originally from Caracas Venezuela—and signed by Chicago Cubs back in late-2013—Torres brings valuable skills along with significant playoff exposure into Detroit's roster ahead upcoming baseball season next year.
