The Detroit Red Wings faced a setback with goalie Cam Talbot sustaining a lower-body injury during their 5-4 overtime loss to the Vancouver Canucks at Little Caesars Arena. The team is awaiting further details on Talbot's condition, which are expected by Monday morning.
Talbot was replaced by Ville Husso in the second period after stopping 12 of 14 shots. Husso made 15 saves for Detroit, while Vancouver's Kevin Lankinen stopped 27 shots to secure the win for his team.
Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin commented on Talbot’s injury, saying, “You never want to see that, but next man up. Huss came in and did a great job for us, got us a point. He did make some big saves, so it’s good to see that from him.”
Detroit initially led when Jonatan Berggren scored off Eric Gustafsson’s shot in the first period. However, Jake DeBrusk quickly put Vancouver ahead with two goals early in the second period during a power play.
Larkin acknowledged the challenge posed by Vancouver's power play: “You give a power play like that a 5-on-3, it’s not good. They have special players over there.”
Alex DeBrincat equalized for Detroit shortly after DeBrusk's goals. Pius Suter then regained the lead for Vancouver late in the second period.
In the third period, Michael Rasmussen tied it again for Detroit with a power-play goal before Vladimir Tarasenko gave them another lead. Erik Brannstrom leveled the score once more before DeBrusk completed his hat trick with an overtime winner.
Head coach Derek Lalonde expressed mixed feelings about the game: “I give the guys credit to come back and get a point...some frustration with it.”
Looking ahead, Detroit will start their road trip against Atlantic Division teams with an upcoming game against Boston Bruins at TD Garden.
Postgame remarks included insights from Lalonde on Talbot's injury and comments from players such as Larkin on contributions from younger teammates Marco Kasper and Jonatan Berggren. Moritz Seider also discussed adapting to changes mid-game and maintaining momentum into future matches.
