The Detroit Red Wings have recalled defenseman William Lagesson from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League.

Lagesson, 28, has started the 2024-25 season with five points, a plus-10 rating, and 12 penalty minutes in 11 games with the Griffins. Standing at 6-foot-2 and weighing 213 pounds, he played for both the Toronto Maple Leafs and Anaheim Ducks during the 2023-24 season. With the Maple Leafs, he recorded four assists, a plus-five rating, and accumulated 19 penalty minutes over 30 games. His time with the Ducks saw him log 13 penalty minutes in ten games. Additionally, Lagesson contributed one assist in five appearances for the AHL's Toronto Marlies that same season.

Originally drafted by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round (91st overall) of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, Lagesson has appeared in 100 NHL games across several teams including the Oilers, Montréal Canadiens, Maple Leafs, and Ducks. Over his career in these leagues since 2019-20, he has collected a total of eleven assists, a plus-two rating, and 54 penalty minutes.

In his AHL career spanning stints with Bakersfield Condors, Chicago Wolves, Marlies, and Griffins, Lagesson has amassed a record of 77 points (23 goals and 54 assists), a plus-43 rating alongside accumulating 130 penalty minutes across 184 games.

Lagesson's professional debut came in Sweden with Djurgårdens IF during the Swedish Hockey League's 2017-18 season where he registered thirteen points and maintained a plus-13 rating over regular-season play. Before turning professional, he played two seasons at the University of Massachusetts from 2015 to 2017.

On an international level representing Sweden, Lagesson participated in consecutive IIHF World Junior Championships during which he earned four points. He also competed at both the IIHF World Under-18 Championship in 2014 and won gold at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge in Canada.
