For the second consecutive game, the Detroit Red Wings experienced a setback after leading by two goals. The team fell to the Anaheim Ducks with a 6-4 loss at Honda Center on Friday night.
Alex Lyon returned as goalie for Detroit, making 23 saves in his first start since October 30 following a lower-body injury. John Gibson of Anaheim made 21 stops, helping the Ducks to rally with four goals in the third period.
"First half was quality again," said Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde. "Very similar to where we were in Pittsburgh. And again, just a little sign of an immature team. At 3-1, we didn’t manage our game."
The scoring began early with Olen Zellweger putting the Ducks ahead just over a minute into the game. Marco Kasper equalized for Detroit with his first NHL goal during a power play, assisted by J.T. Compher and Moritz Seider.
Jonatan Berggren gave Detroit a lead before the end of the first period, scoring on another power play opportunity with assists from Vladimir Tarasenko and Kasper.
Lucas Raymond extended Detroit's advantage early in the second period with assistance from Alex DeBrincat. However, Anaheim responded late in that period through Trevor Zegras.
In the third period, Troy Terry tied it up for Anaheim on a power play goal before Cutter Gauthier scored his inaugural NHL goal to give them another lead.
Ross Johnston furthered Anaheim’s lead shortly thereafter, but DeBrincat pulled one back for Detroit on yet another power play goal late in regulation time.
Ryan Strome sealed Anaheim’s victory with an empty-netter as time wound down.
"We’re all not happy with the result," said Dylan Larkin of Detroit. "We needed to win that hockey game."
The Red Wings will face off against Los Angeles Kings next at Crypto.com Arena on Saturday night.
Lalonde praised Kasper's performance: “Marco’s been playing very well for us.”
Larkin reflected on their recent performances: “Tough loss...this one stings a lot.”
Kasper emphasized focus for upcoming games: “We got to play solid.”
