The Detroit Red Wings faced a tough challenge against the Winnipeg Jets, resulting in a 6-2 defeat at Little Caesars Arena on Wednesday night. This loss marked the Red Wings' third consecutive defeat, bringing their record to 4-5-1.
Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon made 23 saves, while Jets netminder Connor Hellebuyck stopped 19 shots, contributing to Winnipeg's ninth win of the season. J.T. Compher acknowledged the Jets' strength: "That’s a really good hockey team over there," he said. "We kind of dug ourselves a little too big of a hole and weren’t able to fully get out of it."
The game started with early goals from Winnipeg, as Gabriel Vilardi scored at 2:48 and Neal Pionk added another at 4:02. Kyle Connor extended the lead to 3-0 with a backhand shot at 15:44 in the first period.
Detroit head coach Derek Lalonde commented on his team's performance: "The three first-period goals, which obviously got us behind a team like that, were just one-on-one battles," he explained.
Captain Dylan Larkin managed to cut the deficit with a power-play goal in the second period, assisted by Moritz Seider and Lucas Raymond. Alex DeBrincat further reduced the gap to 3-2 with his fifth goal of the season later in the same period.
Lalonde expressed some satisfaction with his team's efforts in the second period: "I liked our second [period]," he noted. However, Winnipeg regained control in the third period with goals from Nino Niederreiter and Pionk again, followed by Colin Miller's score after a power play expired.
Reflecting on recent performances, Larkin observed that there have been ups and downs for the Red Wings this season: "We played some very good teams and it would have been nice to cap off this month...with a point or two," he said.
Next up for Detroit is their final game of a three-game homestand against the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night.
Coach Lalonde discussed his team's identity and challenges faced against Winnipeg: “Probably when see flashes of it...we’re getting out of our zone...getting through the neutral zone," he remarked about moments of effective play. Regarding offensive struggles, he stated: “It was just so sporadic on who was going."
Larkin reflected on contributing factors to their defeat: “We dug ourselves out of it a little bit...but we can’t show up to home ice and let in three goals in the first period."
Compher emphasized playing sharply against skilled teams like Winnipeg: “Definitely not as sharp as you need to be to win games in this league against top teams."
