The Detroit Lions have announced the extension of running back David Montgomery's contract through the 2027 season. The team did not disclose additional terms of the agreement.
Montgomery joined the Lions as an unrestricted free agent in 2023 and has since been a consistent performer. He has started all 18 regular-season games, recording 282 rushes for 1,286 yards with an average of 4.6 yards per carry and scoring 17 touchdowns. Additionally, he has caught 25 passes for 211 yards, averaging 8.4 yards per reception.
Since last season, Montgomery leads all NFL players in games with a rushing touchdown (15) and is tied for the lead in games with at least 50 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown (12). His total of 17 rushing touchdowns since the start of the 2023 season ranks him fourth in the league during that period.
Montgomery was initially drafted by the Chicago Bears in the third round (73rd overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft from Iowa State. Over his career, he has played in 78 games, starting in 69 of them. He has accumulated a total of 1,197 rushes for 4,895 yards with an average of 4.1 yards per carry and scored 43 touchdowns. He also contributed to receiving plays with a total of 180 receptions for 1,451 yards and four touchdowns. In postseason play, Montgomery has rushed for 214 yards on 51 carries and scored two touchdowns along with six receptions for an additional gain of 45 yards.
