The Detroit Red Wings are seeking improvements in their power play performance as they begin the 2024-25 season. With a record of 1-for-11 on the power play in their first three games, head coach Derek Lalonde emphasized patience during a practice session at Little Caesars Arena's BELFOR Training Center.

Lalonde noted that while the team is generating opportunities, they have not been successful in converting them into goals. "Still working on the power play," he said. "It’s frustrating when we have the one goal, and we’ve needed it. I think a couple of those games could’ve looked a little different with finishing on the power play."

He explained that finding effective man-advantage combinations takes time, especially with new and returning players adjusting to each other. "It might be fluid all year in the fact that it’s a positive in that we have a lot of good options," Lalonde stated.

Lalonde highlighted the importance of maintaining energy and momentum during power plays, noting that low-energy performances can be deflating for the team. "There’s frustration that we haven’t scored with looks," he mentioned.

Red Wings player Jonatan Berggren echoed this sentiment, stressing speed and tempo as crucial elements for success. "When the pass is sharp, it goes fast and we shoot a lot," Berggren said.

During practice, Lalonde adjusted the team's two power-play units. The first unit included Erik Gustafsson, Alex DeBrincat, captain Dylan Larkin, Lucas Raymond, and Patrick Kane. The second unit featured Moritz Seider, Michael Rasmussen, J.T. Compher, Joe Veleno, and Berggren.

Vladimir Tarasenko missed practice due to illness but is expected to be available for Thursday's game against the New York Rangers at Little Caesars Arena.

"I like the fact that we’re playing the same opponent again and the challenge of a little bit more on Thursday," Lalonde commented about facing the Rangers once more.
