Dr. Jorge Chinea, an esteemed educator and researcher, has been honored as one of the 2024 Hispanic Heritage Month Game Changers. His journey began in Puerto Rico and New York, where he joined a gang to protect his family. This experience led him to community activism, organizing the Renegades of Harlem to rehabilitate buildings and combat drug use.

In 1983, while pursuing his doctorate, Chinea learned about the Center for Chicano-Boricua Studies from a professor. By 1996, he was working at Wayne State University in Detroit for what is now known as the Center for Latino/a and Latin American Studies (CLLAS), where he serves as Director.

"As Director of the Center for Latino/a Latin American Studies, I have oversight over the unit," Chinea stated. His responsibilities include managing budgets, scholarship funds, curriculum development, academic support programs, faculty assignments, and staff development.

Chinea's recognition comes from Ilitch Sports + Entertainment’s Game Changers series which honors individuals making significant contributions in metro Detroit. The initiative is supported by Comerica Bank along with the Detroit Red Wings and Tigers who award a $1,000 grant to each honoree's chosen charity.

"Jorge Chinea’s dedication to advancing knowledge and understanding of Latino/a and Latin American history has had a profound impact on the academic and local communities," said Tiffany Harrington from Ilitch Sports + Entertainment. "We are excited to recognize Jorge as a Game Changers honoree during Hispanic Heritage Month."

Chinea integrates his research into education through teaching classes on Latino/a and Latin American history. "While wearing my administrative hat, I also enjoy teaching classes...and writing on various topics centered on the ethnohistory and socioeconomic history of the Caribbean," he mentioned.

The recognition from the Red Wings and Tigers is significant for Chinea. "The Game Changers award was a huge and pleasant surprise that motivates me to continue to work for the betterment of the community," he expressed.
