Patrick Kane, now over 16 months post-hip resurfacing surgery, reports feeling both physically and mentally well after a normal offseason and his first full training camp with the Detroit Red Wings. "Throughout camp, the hard days, they’re hard on the body but they’re not hard on the injury anymore," Kane shared following a morning skate at Madison Square Garden. He emphasized the relief of being pain-free and highlighted the importance of being able to train like an athlete instead of focusing on rehabilitation.
Kane last felt this healthy during the 2019-20 season. His hip issues began during the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs while he was with the Chicago Blackhawks in Edmonton. After enduring hip pain for three seasons, Kane opted for hip resurfacing surgery on June 1, 2023.
Post-surgery, Kane signed a one-year contract with Detroit on November 28, 2023, concluding last season with 47 points in 50 games. Eager to contribute further to the Red Wings' progress from last season, he re-signed another one-year deal on July 1. "Going to another Original Six franchise in Detroit... it was a fun year," Kane stated about his decision to return.
Detroit's head coach Derek Lalonde views starting this season with a fully healthy Kane as highly beneficial for the team. Kane has taken on significant roles within the team’s top-six forward group and power-play unit while providing veteran leadership. "I think he can drive us with just his ability and approach," Lalonde commented regarding Kane's impact.
Currently having one assist in three games this season, Kane stresses that consistent performance is crucial for the Red Wings' success. "It’s tough just to be thinking about getting into the playoffs," he noted. "You need to be good throughout the regular season."
