The Detroit Red Wings faced a challenging game against the New York Rangers, resulting in a 4-1 loss at Madison Square Garden. Goalie Alex Lyon, making his first start of the season for Detroit, blocked 24 shots. Meanwhile, Igor Shesterkin made 31 saves for New York.
Red Wings head coach Derek Lalonde expressed mixed feelings about the team's performance: "This is going to be a frustrating game to watch back because we did some pretty good things," he said. "Underlying numbers are going to be very positive."
The Rangers took an early lead when Alex Lafreniere scored off a pass from Artemi Panarin in the first period. Dylan Larkin tied it for Detroit with a last-second goal in the same period. Patrick Kane contributed with his 814th career NHL assist on Larkin's goal.
Chris Kreider regained the lead for New York with a power-play goal in the second period, assisted by Mika Zibanejad. Despite a strong push by Detroit early in the second period, they couldn't score past Shesterkin.
Reilly Smith extended New York's lead in the third period before Zibanejad sealed their victory with an empty-netter.
Lalonde noted that despite strong efforts during parts of the game, "Obviously the game is a lot different when you’re leading, but [Shesterkin] was the difference." Larkin also commented on their power play struggles: “We just haven’t gotten enough quality looks at the net.”
Detroit will face New York again at Little Caesars Arena on Thursday night.
