Red Wings assign Shai Buium to Grand Rapids after activation

The Detroit Red Wings have activated defenseman Shai Buium from the injured non-roster list and assigned him to the Grand Rapids Griffins, their American Hockey League affiliate.

Buium, aged 21, debuted professionally with the Griffins on April 19 against the Iowa Wild. Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 213 pounds, he joined the Red Wings under a three-year entry-level contract signed on April 17 after three seasons at the University of Denver. During his college career, Buium contributed to two NCAA Division I national championships for the Pioneers. In his junior year, he was named to the NCHC Second All-Star Team with a record of 36 points (7 goals and 29 assists), a plus-33 rating, and accumulated 14 penalty minutes over 43 games. As a sophomore in the 2022-23 season, he scored 21 points (4 goals and 17 assists) with a plus-eight rating and served 18 penalty minutes in 38 games.

Buium was drafted by the Red Wings in the second round as the 36th overall pick in the NHL Entry Draft of 2021. He earned a spot on the NCHC All-Rookie Team after achieving 18 points (3 goals and 15 assists), a plus-20 rating, and incurred 12 penalty minutes over his freshman year comprising of 39 games. His performance helped secure another national title alongside fellow Red Wings prospects Carter Mazur and Antti Tuomisto.

Overall, Buium amassed a total of 75 points (14 goals and 61 assists), maintaining a plus-61 rating while serving time for penalties totaling up to 44 minutes across his tenure of playing in all games for Denver.

Before attending university, Buium played parts of two seasons with Sioux City Musketeers in the United States Hockey League from years spanning between2019 through to2021 . Therein he was selected for USHL’s Second All-Rookie Team during which period he collected26points(4goalsand22assists)withaplus16ratingwhileaccumulating27penaltyminutesacross50regularseasonmatches,andadditionallyearnedthreepoints(1goalplus2assists)duringfourpostseasoncontests.

Originating from San Diego California; further development saw him compete within Shattuck St Mary’s Prep duringtheyearsof2020throughoutto2021 ,registering13points(2goalsplus11assists)alongside twopenaltyminutesfrom17appearances. His earlier achievements include posting88pointscomprisingof21goalsplus67assistsaccompaniedby32penaltyminutesoverthecourseof100gameswithShattuckStMary’sunder16squadfrom2018to2020 .
