Detroit City FC's head coach, Danny Dichio, has been recognized as the USL Championship’s Coach of the Month for September. The announcement was made by the league following Dichio's leadership in guiding his team to a 3-2-0 record during the month. Detroit City FC achieved significant victories against New Mexico United and Louisville City FC, both leading their respective conferences.
The team also secured a win on the road against Monterey Bay FC and managed draws with El Paso Locomotive and Charleston Battery. These results have contributed to a six-match unbeaten streak in league play for Detroit City FC, which began on August 24. This marks their longest streak since going seven matches without a loss between August and October 2022 under former head coach Trevor James.
Dichio took over as head coach at the start of the 2024 season after working as an assistant coach at Sacramento Republic in 2022 and 2023. His coaching career began with over ten years spent developing young talent within Toronto FC's youth setup following his successful playing career.
This accolade marks the third time that a Detroit City FC head coach has received this honor since joining the league in 2022. Trevor James was previously named Coach of the Month in April 2022, while Dichio himself received it earlier this year after achieving a perfect start to the season in March.
Dichio secured this month's award with 67 percent of votes cast. Hartford Athletic’s Brendan Burke came second with 21 percent after leading his team through an undefeated month without conceding any goals, securing two wins and two draws to stay competitive for postseason qualification in the Eastern Conference.
The USL Championship’s Coach of the Month award is determined by votes from both the USL Championship National Media Panel and the USL Championship Technical Committee, each contributing equally to the final decision.
