Pat Maloney, the head coach of McBain High School's football team, has been named the Detroit Lions High School Football Coach of the Week for week three. Maloney's team achieved a 29-25 victory over Beal City, marking their third consecutive win this season. Currently, McBain holds a No. 9 ranking in Division 7 and will face Roscommon Bucks on September 20th.
Maloney is in his 23rd year coaching high school football and his tenth as head coach at McBain. He has accumulated a record of 62-35 and led the team to the playoffs in eight out of nine seasons, reaching regional finals in 2015 and 2023. Before joining McBain, he coached at Rudyard High School for ten years and spent three years as an assistant coach at Sault Area High School.
The Detroit Lions' Football Education department conducted an interview with Maloney about his recent victory and his commitment to community service. The interview can be accessed on www.DetroitLions.com/coachoftheweek.
The Coach of the Week program acknowledges coaches who excel both on and off the field, focusing on player development and safety. A panel consisting of high school football media members selects each week's winner. This year's program will distribute $12,000 to support Michigan high school football programs, with contributions from the Detroit Lions and NFL Foundation.
Each weekly winner receives a $1,000 donation for their school's football program. At season's end, one coach will be named Coach of the Year and receive a $3,000 donation for their school's program. Winners also receive certificates signed by Lions' head coach Dan Campbell and NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.
Now in its 28th year, the Detroit Lions High School Coach of the Week program has contributed $503,000 to high school football programs across Michigan. For more details about the program, Chris Fritzsching can be contacted via email at chris.fritzsching@lions.nfl.net.
