The Detroit Red Wings have narrowed their Training Camp roster to 23 players ahead of the 2024-25 NHL season. However, head coach Derek Lalonde emphasized that there remains some uncertainty in finalizing the Opening Night lineup due to salary cap considerations.

“I think it’s today’s NHL and where you are in the [salary] cap,” Lalonde stated after a practice session at Little Caesars Arena's BELFOR Training Center. “You’re trying to maximize your roster so it might not look clean today, as in who’s here and who’s not, but it’s something we’re working through.”

Currently, the Red Wings' roster includes 13 forwards, seven defensemen, and three goalies. Among recent moves, Justin Holl was assigned to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins after clearing waivers. The team also signed Austin Watson to a one-year, two-way contract following his professional tryout.

“He’s a guy who we’re very happy to have in our organization,” said Lalonde regarding Watson. The 32-year-old forward had previously played with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Lalonde expressed confidence in carrying three goaltenders into the season: Cam Talbot, Alex Lyon, and Ville Husso. “A good problem in that we came into this...hoping someone could show us they can help us win on Night 1,” he explained.

Prospects like Marco Kasper made significant impressions during Training Camp. Lalonde noted Kasper's performance but acknowledged tough decisions had to be made for roster optimization.

“I think of all the young guys...Marco really stood out,” said Lalonde. “Obviously some scenarios where he could have found himself in a Day 1 lineup...it’s not a bad thing for him to go straight down.”

With two practice days remaining before facing the Pittsburgh Penguins, Lalonde highlighted how more clarity on player roles will aid preparation for Thursday's opener.

“Unique schedule in that we played six [preseason] games in six days,” said Lalonde about their exhibition schedule strategy.

Forward Alex DeBrincat mentioned that while the team is well-prepared, there is still room for improvement. “We’ve been practicing really hard...we should be ready for Game 1.”

DeBrincat stressed returning to last season's successful strategies: “When we’re working hard, we’re a good team...Be focused every game.”
