Detroit City Football Club has confirmed that Stephen Carroll, the team's long-term defender and captain, has signed a contract extension. The new agreement guarantees two years with an option for a third year in 2027. Carroll is recognized as the all-time appearance leader for Le Rouge and was awarded the 2018 Black Arrow MVP. As a City Centurion, he has made 143 professional appearances for the club, surpassing any other player in this category. He also holds the distinction of being the longest-serving current captain in Detroit's professional sports scene.
Originally from Cork, Ireland, Carroll joined Le Rouge before the 2017 National Premier Soccer League season when the team was still playing at an amateur level. He also played college soccer at Davenport University in Michigan.
Carroll quickly gained popularity among fans in 2017 and played a crucial role in securing victory at the 2017 NPSL Midwest Region Final against AFC Ann Arbor.
In 2018, his contributions to a strong defensive line earned him the club’s Black Arrow MVP Award, aligning him with some of the best players to have represented Detroit City FC.
After Dave Edwardson retired, Carroll took over as captain of Detroit City FC in 2019. Under his leadership and head coach Trevor James, the team won a Great Lakes Division trophy and later claimed victory in the NPSL Member’s Cup.
When Detroit City FC transitioned to professional status in 2020 for its inaugural season in the National Independent Soccer Association, Carroll was one of the first players announced on their roster. He significantly contributed to successful seasons in both 2020 and 2021 before moving up to compete in the USL Championship.
Since joining USL Championship play, Carroll has been integral to all three seasons so far. He has logged over 2,500 league minutes each year since 2022 and started 88 matches within this competition. Additionally, he scored five goals during this period: two each in 2022 and 2023 and one goal this season against Orange County SC.
