The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed defenseman Moritz Seider to a seven-year contract, averaging an annual value of $8.55 million.

Seider, 23, played in all 82 games during the 2023-24 season and ranked among the team's leading defensemen with nine goals (3rd), 33 assists (2nd), and 42 points (2nd). He also recorded 51 penalty minutes (2nd), three power play goals (1st), and 17 power play points (2nd). Additionally, he led the team with 135 shots, 211 hits, and 212 blocks while averaging 22:22 on ice per game. Seider was the only NHL player to achieve at least 200 hits and blocks in the same season, setting franchise records in both categories.

In his third NHL campaign, Seider reached several milestones: his 100th career point with an assist on October 26 against Winnipeg, his 200th career game on December 29 against Nashville, and his 100th career assist on January 27 against Vegas. He matched his point total from the previous season when he scored five goals and had 37 assists.

Seider made a significant impact in his debut season in 2021-22 by leading all NHL rookie defensemen in multiple categories including games played (82), assists (43), points (50), and power play points (21). He received the Calder Memorial Trophy for being the top rookie, joining notable former winners from the Red Wings like Roger Crozier and Terry Sawchuk. Seider also earned a spot on the All-Rookie Team alongside Lucas Raymond.

Selected sixth overall by Detroit in the first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft, Seider has accumulated a total of 134 points (21 goals,113 assists) and has served 125 penalty minutes over his career spanning 246 games. His point total is currently the highest among defensemen from his draft class.

Before joining the Red Wings full-time, Seider was loaned to Rögle BK of the Swedish Hockey League for the 2020-21 season where he was named Defenseman of the Year. He previously played for Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League during the entire 2019-20 season. At age sixteen, he began his professional career with Adler Mannheim in Germany's Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) where he was named Rookie of the Year.

Internationally, Seider has represented Germany at four consecutive IIHF World Championships from 2019-23. He won a silver medal at the most recent championship while recording five points across ten games. Additionally, he was named Best Defenseman at both the senior level World Championship in 2021 and various junior-level tournaments earlier in his career.
