DETROIT – The Detroit Tigers have announced the acquisition of righthanded pitchers Joseph Montalvo and Chase Lee from the Texas Rangers in exchange for lefthanded pitcher Andrew Chafin.

Lee, 25, has made 11 appearances, including one start, between the ACL Rangers and Triple-A Round Rock this season. He has a record of 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA (14.0 IP/3 ER) and 18 strikeouts. In 2023, Lee spent the entire season with Round Rock, going 3-4 with four saves, a 3.98 ERA (63.1 IP/28 ER), and 87 strikeouts. He was named Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week for the week ending May 21.

Originally selected by Texas in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft out of the University of Alabama, Lee has made 122 appearances, including five starts, over four professional seasons. He has compiled a 6-7 record with 14 saves, a 3.79 ERA (149.2 IP/63 ER), and 203 strikeouts.

Montalvo, 22, has started 13 games with Single-A Hickory this season and is currently at a record of 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA (59.0 IP/16 ER) and 73 strikeouts. Among South Atlantic League pitchers with at least 55 innings pitched, he ranks second in ERA at 2.44, tenth in strikeout rate at 29.9%, eleventh in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 3.84, twelfth in strikeouts per nine innings at an average of 11.14, and fourteenth in WHIP at a rate of 1.14.

He was named SAL Pitcher of the Month for May after achieving a record of three wins without losses and an ERA of just over one point four zero (25.2 IP/4 ER) alongside accumulating thirty-two strikeouts across five starts.

Selected by the Rangers in the twentieth round of the same draft year as Lee but out of Central Pointe Christian (FL), Montalvo has made thirty-five appearances professionally including thirty starts holding an eleven-four win-loss tally alongside his career ERA standing slightly below two-point-seven (154.1 IP/46 ER). In addition to being named Carolina League Pitcher during April last year when closing that month’s competition posting another remarkable performance reflected through weekly metrics highlighting such form factor driven aspects indicative towards player value assessments impacting trade decisions positively benefiting receiving team(s).
