The Detroit Tigers have selected shortstop Bryce Rainer from Harvard-Westlake High School in California with the 11th overall pick in the 2024 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft.
Rainer, 19, posted impressive statistics during his senior season, hitting .505/.614/.722/1.336 with nine doubles, four home runs, and 22 RBIs over 33 games. He drew 28 walks while striking out only 14 times and stole 17 bases, being caught just once. Following his season performance, he received several accolades including Baseball America and MaxPreps First Team All-American honors, Cal-Hi Sports Senior Player of the Year, Mission League Most Valuable Player, and The Los Angeles Daily News All-Area Player of the Year.
As a freshman at Harvard-Westlake, Rainer was named MaxPreps National Freshman of the Year. He hit .392 with 13 RBIs and had a pitching record of 9-0 with a 1.46 ERA and 74 strikeouts in 55.2 innings.
In addition to his high school achievements, Rainer was part of Team USA’s 2023 U18 National Team where he played in eight games. At the National High School Invitational featuring top prospects nationwide, he went seven for thirteen with two doubles, five walks, no strikeouts and two stolen bases.
The Tigers also hold two additional picks on the first night of the MLB Draft: No. 49 in the second round and No.72 in Competitive Balance Round B.
