DETROIT — Detroit City FC settled for a 1-1 draw against Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday evening. After going down to 10 men in the 59th minute, Detroit City rallied back as an Elvis Amoh header in the 71st minute gave DCFC a 1-0 lead, but a 94th-minute equalizer saw the two sides share the points.
Head Coach Danny Dichio made two changes from his Starting XI from last week’s 4-0 road victory over Miami FC. James Murphy returned to the starting lineup, replacing Connor Rutz, and Maxi Rodriguez replaced Victor Bezerra in the attack.
Both teams struggled to gain a footing in this match, trading duels in the midfield throughout the first 20 minutes. The first significant opportunity for either side came in the 19th minute when a Tampa Bay attack led to Devon Amoo-Mensah ending it with a clearance off of a Tampa cross.
The biggest action for Detroit came in the 41st minute when Abdoulaye Diop and James Murphy picked up simultaneous yellow cards off of a challenge in the midfield.
The teams went into halftime level at 0-0, but fouls dominated as they combined for 17 fouls.
Coming out of halftime, Detroit picked up their first opportunity of the night in the 53rd minute. Diop received the ball with a free kick from Nate Steinwascher, broke through a couple of Tampa defenders, and took a shot from just outside the box that went just above the crossbar.
Moments later, Diop was fouled on a header and immediately retaliated against the Tampa Bay defender. After both teams came together, referees sorted out the situation and gave Diop his second yellow card in the 59th minute. Arguing this decision, Dichio also received a yellow card.
Despite being down a man for final minutes of play, Detroit responded energetically. Villanueva had an opportunity on a counterattack in the 63rd minute but shot it right into Tampa Bay's keeper's gloves. In response to their numerical disadvantage, DCFC turned up their tempo to seek an opening goal.
In quick succession during this period of heightened effort, DCFC made substitutions: Matt Sheldon and Elvis Amoh entered for Rhys William and Ben Morris at around minute sixty-six; not long after these changes were implemented (71st min), Amoh headed home following set-piece service initiated close-to-midfield line providing Detroits' only tally within remaining regular time frame left till end-game whistle blowing signal concluded match event status quo position achieved until stoppage time ensuing thereafter...
At game's closure - extended by seven added minutes – visitors desperately pursued equalization efforts resulting success corner-kick setup fourth-minute extra-time which forced Steinwascher critical save attempt... however rebounded loose-ball eventually converted netting thereby concluding tied outcome marking final scoreline register equally balanced between participating contingents
This result keeps Detroit City still positioned fifth place standings Eastern Conference competition table...
