DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings selected seven players during the second day of the 2024 NHL Entry Draft at Sphere in Las Vegas.
The Red Wings chose left wing Max Plante (47th overall) in the second round, center Ondřej Becher (80th overall) in the third round, and goaltender Landon Miller (126th overall) in the fourth round. In subsequent rounds, Detroit selected defenseman John Whipple (144th overall) in the fifth round and left wing Charlie Forslund (176th overall) in the sixth round. They used their seventh-round picks on left wing Austin Baker (203rd overall) and defenseman Fisher Scott (208th overall).
Detroit’s first pick of the day was Max Plante. The 5-foot-11, 177-pound forward has spent two seasons with the U.S. National Team Development Program in Plymouth, Mich. Plante recorded 61 points (15-46-61), a plus-16 rating, and 16 penalty minutes in 51 games during the 2023-24 campaign with NTDP’s under-18 squad. He also finished with 29 points (6-23-29), a plus-nine rating, and six penalty minutes in 25 games with Team USA in the United States Hockey League. A native of Duluth, Minn., Plante is committed to the University of Minnesota-Duluth for the 2024-25 season.
Plante competed at Hermantown High School in 2021-22, racking up 72 points (18-54-72) in just 31 games. On the international stage, he won a silver medal with Team USA at the 2024 IIHF World Under-18 Championship and a gold medal at the 2022 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge. Plante is the son of Chicago Blackhawks Assistant Coach Derek Plante.
In the third round, Detroit selected Ondřej Becher who has played two seasons with WHL’s Prince George Cougars. The 6-foot-2, 187-pound forward ranked among team leaders with notable statistics including 32 goals and a plus-38 rating over his recent season. Prior to arriving in North America, Becher played for AZ Havířov’s under-20 squad and made his professional debut there as well.
Landon Miller was chosen by Detroit with their lone fourth-round pick. The goaltender played for OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds posting a record of success including a goals-against average of 2.79 and an .889 save percentage over his recent season.
John Whipple was picked by Detroit using their only fifth-round selection. The defenseman spent two seasons with NTDP registering significant contributions including earning a silver medal at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship.
Charlie Forslund was chosen by Detroit as their sixth-round pick. The left wing recorded multiple achievements across different levels within Falu IF’s system in Sweden's third division.
Austin Baker was taken by Detroit as one of their seventh-round selections having spent two seasons with NTDP recording notable performances such as accumulating points across different campaigns.
Detroit concluded its draft selections by choosing Fisher Scott who recorded significant contributions for USHL’s Dubuque Fighting Saints helping them reach Clark Cup Final.
