The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Albert Johansson to a one-year contract extension, the team announced on June 19, 2024.

Johansson, 23, spent the entire 2023-24 season with the American Hockey League’s Grand Rapids Griffins. During that period, he recorded 21 points (6-15-21), maintained a plus-seven rating, and accumulated 46 penalty minutes over 66 games. In postseason play, he added three assists and eight penalty minutes in nine contests, aiding the Griffins in reaching the Central Division Finals.

Johansson made his North American professional debut with the Griffins in the 2022-23 season. That year, he posted 15 points (5-10-15) and incurred 38 penalty minutes across 53 games. The defenseman was selected by the Red Wings in the second round (60th overall) of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft. To date, Johansson has amassed a total of 36 points (11-25-36) and served 84 penalty minutes in his tenure of 119 AHL games with Grand Rapids.

A native of Karlstad, Sweden, Johansson played parts of four seasons with Färjestad BK in the Swedish Hockey League from 2018 to 2022. There, he accrued a total of 57 points (15-42-57), achieved a plus-10 rating, and received 44 penalty minutes over 141 games. Notably, Johansson contributed to Färjestad BK's SHL championship win in 2022 by recording eight points (2-6-8) during their postseason run.

In addition to his professional career in Sweden's top league, Johansson also performed at various youth levels for Färjestad’s teams: under-20 (38 points), under-18 (36 points), and under-16 (26 points). Internationally, Johansson represented Sweden at several prestigious tournaments including the IIHF World Junior Championship in both January and December sessions of respective years where he played alongside Lucas Raymond and Elmer Söderblom. He registered three assists over five games at these championships.

Johansson's international accolades include capturing a gold medal at the IIHF World Under-18 Championship in April where he recorded one assist over seven games. He also secured a silver medal for Sweden at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup with two penalty minutes over five appearances.
