Detroit, MI - Congressman Shri Thanedar announced his participation as an original cosponsor of the US Citizenship Act of 2023, a monumental legislation to reform the United States' obsolete immigration system. As an immigrant, scientist, entrepreneur, husband, father, and grandfather, Congressman Thanedar understands the challenges immigrants face while seeking a better future in the United States. 

The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2023 aims to make the immigration system more efficient, humane, and productive by tackling the root causes of irregular migration, providing asylum seekers with a pathway to citizenship, and modernizing the legal immigration system. As a member of the Small Business Committee and the Homeland Security Committee, Congressman Thanedar fully supports the modifications outlined in the legislation that impact legal immigration, particularly those related to entrepreneurship, innovation, and workforce development, which would drastically create more jobs and grow our economy. 

"I understand the importance of immigration to the foundation of our country and the success of our economy; that’s why we must provide a legal pathway for immigrants to contribute to our values," stated Congressman Thanedar. "As an original cosponsor and immigrant, I am honored to support this critical piece of legislation to help improve our economy, reunite families, and promote the principles of the American Dream."

The U.S. Citizenship Act of 2023 includes initiatives that would establish an avenue to citizenship for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders, and Agricultural Workers while also extending visa availability and decreasing backlogs in family and employment-based immigration categories; The act also contains proposals to increase border security, invest in Central American countries achieve stability, and address the push factors of migration, including as violence, corruption, and poverty.

Congressman Thanedar is proud to join his fellow members in endorsing the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2023 as an original cosponsor. The congressman believes that it is long overdue for our community to come together and for us to establish a just and ethical immigration policy that upholds both the rule of law and our most fundamental principles. His background as an immigrant and business owner provides him with a distinctive perspective on the difficulties that the immigration system in our country is confronted with, and his viewpoint will be important in ensuring that the law's objectives of fostering equality, economic opportunity, and economic growth are realized.
