U.S. Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) is facing backlash after voting to impeach former President Donald Trump.
Meijer, a freshman representative who was recently sworn in, said the vote was likely to be political suicide.
"It may have been an act of political suicide but it's what I felt was necessary for the good of the country, to have accountability in this moment but also to set a path to moving forward," Meijer told the Detroit Free Press.
Meijer said he needed to buy body armor and change up his routine due to fears of violence.
Meijer was one of ten Republican members of Congress who voted to impeach Trump.
The others were Reps. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.), Anthony Gonzalez (R-Ohio), Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-Wash.), John Katko (R-N.Y.), Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Dan Newhouse (R-Wash.), Tom Rice (R-S.C.), Fred Upton (R-Mich.) and David Valadao (R-Calif.)
The impeachment vote was made in the wake of the Capitol being overrun by protesters.
