Detroit Manufacturing Systems issued the following announcement on Jan. 6.
Perinatal depression is a collective term for prenatal (before-birth) and postpartum (after-birth) depression.
Pregnancy and the weeks following birth are physically and emotionally challenging- it wouldn’t be uncommon to feel extreme joy and happiness one moment, only to feel extreme sadness, fatigue and anxiety in the next.
Pregnancy shares some signs and symptoms of depression- and may be why perinatal depression often goes undiagnosed.
Recognizing the Symptoms:
- Frequent crying
- Feelings of emptiness or hopelessness
- Increased anxiety
- Difficulty sleeping
- Fatigued and/or changes in appetite
- Trouble feeling connected to the baby
If you’re experiencing any symptoms of perinatal depression, the most important thing to remember is that you are not alone.
Finding Support (in addition to talking to your doctor):
- Ask for help- talk to your spouse, significant other, a family member or a friend.
- Join a mom-to-mom support group
- Shared experiences are can help you feel supported and learn how other moms get through it.
