DETROIT PUBLIC SCHOOLS COMMUNITY DISTRICT: Robotics Team Participation sparks career options leading to a paid internship and job opportunities

Det

Detroit Public Schools Community District issued the following announcement.

Re’Vyn Fields and her twin brother made it and Re’Vyn’s journey to success is an example for us all.

From her sophomore to senior year at Southeastern High School, Re’Vyn (pronounced Raven) was involved with the school’s robotics team.  She liked robotics because it was something new to try. And, Re’Vyn enjoyed learning concepts related to programming as well as coming up with ways to make operational systems more efficient. Little did she know that spark of interest would lead to an opportunity to get paid for what was quickly becoming her passion.

While on a field trip to the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in her junior year in 2019, Re’Vyn heard about an internship opportunity at the auto manufacturing facility of FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles), the one-time Chrysler Corporation. She decided to apply for the opening and, Re’Vyn was hired for a paid internship that summer in 2019. It turned out to be anything but a typical, go get coffee and wait for further instruction type of internship.

Re’Vyn’s robotics team background from Southeastern helped her jump right in. She studied FCA’s module work systems in the plant, offering input to make them more efficient, helping the company save money, and helping her standout in the eyes of plant management. However, Re’Vyn wasn’t finished.

Noting her interest for finding efficiencies in systems, FCA also had Re’Vyn doing administrative work, assisting with organization and inventory tracking in the plant. FCA liked Re’Vyn’s work so much, they gave her an opportunity to continue to work at the plant on weekends, well beyond her time as an intern, something she did until this March when the COVID-19 virus outbreak resulted in the temporary closure of the plant for safety concerns.

Re’Vyn recently received good news that she will be back on the job, slated to resume her duties on Friday, June 26.  Re’Vyn noted how grateful she has been for the opportunity to use what she learned while being on Southeastern’s robotics team and getting paid on top of it with a great internship.

“I was able to use the money to pay off my senior dues and help my siblings at the same time,” she said humbly. And speaking of siblings, Re’Vyn’s educational journey has included her twin brother, Revon Fields.

The siblings have had quite a ride, having spent their 12-year (K-12) academic careers attending the same schools and, in some instances, being in the same class!

“We’ve accomplished a lot together and I am heartened by that,” Re’vyn said reflectively. “He’s had my back and I have had his.”

The duo will now graduate together this week (Thursday, June 25 is Southeastern’s graduation) and are considering starting their college experience at the same school, Wayne County Community College District, although Re’Vyn is looking to eventually go to Oakland University, with her professional goal to be a programmer. She’s also been taking time to reflect on her soon to be ending high school days.

“I have made a lot of friends at Southeastern,” adding that she was also involved with student government as well as playing softball her junior year. And, she balanced her activities with being an excellent student, consistently getting grades at or near a 3.0 average.

Characterized by Southeastern leaders as “an excellent student and stellar young lady”, Re’Vyn Fields is a reflection of the many students who make up the District’s student body. Congratulations Re’Vyn and Revon as well as to all members of Southeastern’s and the District’s class of 2020.
