University of Detroit Mercy issued the following announcement on Oct. 21
Detroit Mercy’s Chemistry Club recently achieved a rating of “Outstanding” for the 2018-2019 academic year by the American Chemical Society (ACS). Only the top 5% of all student member groups achieve the “Outstanding” ranking nationally! This also marks the 15th straight year the Chemistry Club has earned this prestigious designation.
Written comments on the substantial annual report submitted by officers last May commended the Club's fundraising and outreach activities, which support Detroit Mercy’s Jesuit and Mercy values and mission, as well as its varied social events and adherence to the Society's strategic plan under diversity, inclusion, equity and respect ("Women in Science Symposium").
In addition, Detroit Mercy’s ACS Student Chapter received a Green Chemistry Award for activities conducted during the 2018-2019 academic year. The University’s ACS Student Chapter was recognized for engaging in three or more green chemistry activities. Award-winning chapters will also be honored at the ACS National Meeting in Philadelphia, Penn., on March 22, 2020. According to the ACS, “Professors Matthew Mio and Mara Livezey, co-faculty advisors of the chapter, deserve special commendation. Few faculty members are willing to make the great commitment of time and energy that a successful chapter requires. We believe that Professor Mio and Professor Evans’s efforts are representative of the very best in undergraduate science education and mentoring.”
Chemistry Club President Cameron Johns will accept the award on behalf of the Club at the ACS National meeting in Philadelphia in March 2020.
