Senator Lana Theis, a member of the Michigan Senate, posted a series of statements on January 31, 2026, regarding the collapse of the Gotion deal. In her tweets, she criticized Governor Whitmer’s support for the project and raised concerns about its impact on local communities and taxpayers.
In her first post at 19:15 UTC, Theis stated, “The Gotion deal collapsed — exactly what I warned about from the beginning. Governor Whitmer pushed this project despite serious red flags. I opposed it because it ignored local communities, raised national security and environmental concerns, and put Michigan taxpayers at risk.”
Later that evening at 19:43 UTC, she continued to address the reasons behind the project’s failure: “This deal collapsed because basic questions about national security, environmental risk, and taxpayer accountability were never answered.”
At 23:55 UTC on the same day, Theis concluded her commentary by emphasizing fiscal responsibility: “This is why accountability matters. The deal collapsed — and now taxpayers are paying the price.”
The Gotion project referenced by Senator Theis involved plans for a battery manufacturing facility in Michigan backed by Gotion Inc., a subsidiary of Chinese battery manufacturer Gotion High-Tech. The proposal faced opposition over issues such as potential national security risks due to foreign ownership, environmental concerns related to large-scale industrial development, and debates over state-funded incentives offered to attract the investment.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer had supported the initiative as part of efforts to boost job creation and advance clean energy manufacturing in the state. However, critics including Senator Theis argued that insufficient transparency and unresolved questions ultimately led to public skepticism and contributed to the project’s collapse.
