Goalie prospect Sebastian Cossa is focused on advancing his career following his time with the Detroit Red Wings during the 2024-25 season. The 22-year-old celebrated his NHL debut with a shootout victory against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center on December 9.

“That experience was huge for me,” Cossa shared with DetroitRedWings.com. He reflected on the opportunity to play in a competitive setting, expressing satisfaction with the win and growth from that experience.

In his second full season with the Grand Rapids Griffins, Cossa recorded a 21-15-5 record, achieving a 2.45 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage over an AHL career-high of 41 regular-season games before participating in two Calder Cup Playoff matches.

Steve Yzerman, Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager, commented on April 29 about Cossa’s performance: “He had a very good first two-thirds of the season. His play dipped a little bit after the American League All-Star break. I’m not ruling anything out, but he’s going to have to take another step here if we want to count on him to be in Detroit next year.”

Cossa continues to work on various aspects of his game since being drafted No. 15 overall in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He noted improvements in skating and game management as significant areas of development.

“There’s been a lot of maturity,” said Cossa regarding his progress off the ice as well. He acknowledged growing every year since turning professional in 2021.

Cossa also praised Griffins head coach Dan Watson for playing an essential role in his development. “He’s awesome,” Cossa remarked about Watson, noting their comfortable relationship and open-door policy.
