The Detroit Red Wings concluded their weekend at the 2025 NHL Entry Draft in Los Angeles by making strategic picks and trades. On the second day of the event, held at L.A. Live’s Peacock Theater, the team made seven selections and executed three trades, including acquiring goaltender John Gibson from the Anaheim Ducks.
“We don’t necessarily draft by position,” said Steve Yzerman, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Red Wings. “We always try… to get the best prospect and we put them in that order… We’re happy with what we were able to accomplish here in the Draft.”
Detroit’s first pick on Day 2 was forward Eddie Genborg at No. 44 overall. Genborg, who played for Linköping HC’s U-20 squad in Sweden, expressed his gratitude via Zoom: “I’m very thankful to get drafted by Detroit.”
The Red Wings also acquired John Gibson from Anaheim in exchange for Petr Mrazek and two future draft picks. Yzerman highlighted Gibson’s experience: “John has been, throughout the course of his career, a proven starter and a good starter in the NHL.”
In subsequent rounds, Detroit selected several prospects including Michal Pradel from Slovakia and Brent Solomon from Champlin Park High School. Kris Draper, Assistant Manager and Director of Amateur Scouting for Detroit, commented on Solomon’s skills: “The one thing that certainly stood out to us right away was the release… The way he shoots the puck.”
The team’s strategy involved bolstering their lineup with young talent across various positions. This included drafting defenseman Nikita Tyurin and Will Murphy.
With its final pick in this year’s draft (No. 204 overall), Detroit chose Grayden Robertson-Palmer from Phillips Academy Andover.
All newly drafted players will attend the 2025 Development Camp starting June 30 at BELFOR Training Center inside Little Caesars Arena.
“There’s so much that we want to offer them,” Draper noted regarding player development.
