The Detroit Red Wings ended their 2025-26 season with an 8-1 defeat against the Florida Panthers at Amerant Bank Arena on April 16. The loss came in the final game of the regular season for both teams.

The outcome marked a difficult end for the Red Wings, who finished with a record of 41 wins, 31 losses, and 10 overtime losses. Despite their strong history as one of the National Hockey League’s Original Six teams and as the top-performing American franchise in league history according to the official website, Detroit was unable to secure a win in its last outing. The team represents Detroit, Michigan and hosts games in downtown Detroit at Little Caesars Arena according to the official website.

Head coach Todd McLellan said after the game, “Both teams came in with nothing on the line, and you can see their championship pedigree. So, I’m going to compliment the Panthers — it runs throughout their organization. They came and played, and it meant something to them.”

Forward J.T. Compher reflected on his team’s performance: “We didn’t play like we had respect for the game tonight, and that was the result,” he said. “When you don’t respect an opponent or a game or anything in this League, that’s what happens.”

The Panthers took control early with four goals by midway through the second period before Justin Faulk scored Detroit’s only goal late in that frame. Injuries also affected Detroit during play when goaltender John Gibson left after taking a shot off his mask.

James van Riemsdyk addressed consistency issues throughout both this game and over recent weeks: “When you’re not consistent enough, you’re going to find ways to beat yourself,” he said. He added later about preparing for next year: “Every year is a little bit different…that should fuel you going into your offseason…to get more of that consistency.”

Detroit has won eleven Stanley Cup championships according to its official website, maintaining a legacy of excellence despite missing postseason contention this year.

Looking ahead to next season’s preparations van Riemsdyk said: “Obviously…when you don’t make the playoffs it’s a longer offseason so there’s no excuse not use it come back September add some elements your game or sharpen some things up that you’re already good at.” Fans are encouraged by team officials to follow updates over summer at DetroitRedWings.com.
