The Detroit Red Wings faced a challenging game against the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena, resulting in a 4-1 loss. This marks the second time in eleven days that the Red Wings have struggled to maintain momentum against the Capitals.

J.T. Compher reflected on the match, stating, “That’s two games against this team that we were in and they found a way to win, but we didn’t.” He emphasized the importance of every point as the season progresses.

Detroit’s goalie Petr Mrazek made 22 saves, while Washington’s Logan Thompson recorded 23 saves. Detroit head coach Todd McLellan commented on the team’s performance: “We pushed a first-place hockey club, a 100-point team, and had every opportunity to try and come away with a victory.”

Dylan Strome opened scoring for Washington with a wrist shot in the first period. Detroit’s Dylan Larkin equalized later in the period, marking his 28th goal of the season and securing his fourth consecutive 60-point campaign.

Despite outshooting Washington in the second period, Detroit could not break the tie. Pierre-Luc Dubois scored for Washington early in the third period to give them a lead they would not relinquish. Tom Wilson and Connor McMichael added goals shortly after to seal Washington’s victory.

McLellan noted some areas for improvement: “The third [goal] is the one that makes no sense to me… That’s got to get fixed.”

Elmer Soderblom left during the third period due to an undisclosed issue. Alex DeBrincat played his 600th NHL game during this match.

Reflecting on their situation, Larkin said, “There’s still time… We just did it to ourselves tonight.”

The Red Wings will next face off against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday night.
