The Detroit Red Wings have announced the signing of forward Jonatan Berggren to a one-year contract extension, valued at an average annual amount of $1.825 million.

Berggren, aged 24, played the entire 2024-25 season with the Red Wings. During this period, he recorded 24 points and spent 14 minutes in the penalty box over 75 games. In the previous season (2023-24), Berggren split his time between the Red Wings and their affiliate team, the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League (AHL). With Detroit, he accumulated six points in 12 games while also playing a significant role for Grand Rapids by leading them in goals, assists, and total points.

Berggren’s contributions were pivotal during his time with Grand Rapids in both regular-season play and during their run to the Central Division Finals in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Originally drafted by Detroit as their second-round pick in 2018, Berggren has made notable progress since joining North American hockey leagues. Over three seasons with Detroit’s NHL squad, he has amassed a total of 58 points across 154 games.

Before moving to North America, Berggren played for SkellefteÃ¥ AIK in Sweden’s top professional league. He led his team in scoring during the 2020-21 season and had successful stints with both Skellefteå’s senior and under-20 teams earlier in his career.

Internationally, Berggren represented Sweden at several championships. His achievements include earning medals at various levels: bronze at both World Junior Championships and World Under-18 Championships as well as gold at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.
