The Detroit Red Wings have announced the signing of defenseman Albert Johansson to a two-year contract extension. The deal comes with an average annual value of $1.125 million.

Johansson, 24, played the entire 2024-25 season with the Red Wings, where he recorded nine points and accumulated 30 penalty minutes over 61 games. Notably, he was the only NHL rookie defenseman to score two game-winning goals during the season, achieving this on January 10 against Chicago and March 16 against Vegas.

Prior to his time in the NHL, Johansson spent the 2023-24 season with the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League (AHL). During that season, he logged 21 points and maintained a plus-seven rating across 66 regular-season games. His contributions also extended into the Calder Cup Playoffs, where he added three assists over nine games as the Griffins advanced to the Central Division Finals.

Johansson began his North American professional career with the Griffins in the 2022-23 season. Over two seasons in the AHL, he amassed a total of 36 points in 119 games. The Red Wings selected Johansson in the second round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft.

Before joining North American leagues, Johansson played parts of four seasons with Färjestad BK in Sweden’s top league, contributing significantly to their SHL championship win in 2022. Internationally, Johansson has represented Sweden at various levels including winning a gold medal at the 2019 IIHF World Under-18 Championship and earning a silver medal at the Hlinka Gretzky Cup in 2018.
