Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of statements on July 16, 2025, addressing recent developments in financial regulation and economic policy.
In her first post, Tlaib criticized a judicial decision affecting medical debt reporting: “A Trump-appointed judge reversed the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s rule that banned medical debt from credit reports. No one chooses to get sick. Medical debt should not exist and should never haunt someone financially.” (July 16, 2025)
Later that day, she commented on federal wage standards: “The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 an hour for the past 16 years. That’s an annual salary of $15,080. Starvation wages.” (July 16, 2025)
Tlaib also addressed concerns about financial stability related to digital assets and large corporations: “So-called ‘shadow banks’ helped cause the 2008 financial crisis. So why is Congress working to expand shadow banking—via stablecoins—w/ the GENIUS Act? If Walmart and Amazon can issue their own stablecoins, this creates a tremendous concentration of commercial and financial risk.” (July 16, 2025)
Tlaib has served in Congress since 2019 after replacing Brenda Jones and previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. She was born in Detroit in 1976 and continues to reside there. Tlaib holds a BA from Wayne State University and a JD from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
