Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, has voiced strong opposition to recent legislative actions and federal budget priorities through a series of social media posts.
On July 17, 2025, Tlaib criticized the influence of cryptocurrency companies in federal elections and raised concerns about new crypto-related legislation. She stated, “In 2024, nearly HALF of corporate $$$ in federal elections came from crypto companies. Today’s industry-friendly crypto bills lack basic consumer protections, expose our economy to profound risks, and fail to address President Trump’s staggering crypto corruption. I voted NO.”
Later that evening, she addressed proposed funding cuts by Republican lawmakers: “Kicking 17 million Americans off their health care wasn’t enough for Republicans. Now they want to cut funding for PBS and NPR, reproductive health, refugee programs and more.” This statement reflects ongoing debates over federal spending on public services and social programs.
In a post on July 18, 2025, Tlaib expressed her refusal to support further increases in military spending: “Our country is obsessed with war. Every year, Congress votes to invest in death and destruction instead of health care, housing, clean air and water, or ending child poverty here at home. I will not vote to send another $831.5 billion to the Pentagon.”
Tlaib has represented Michigan’s 12th district since 2019 after succeeding Brenda Jones. Before her tenure in Congress, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Born in Detroit in 1976 and currently residing there at age 46, Tlaib holds degrees from Wayne State University (BA) and Thomas M. Cooley Law School (JD).
