Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress and was born in Detroit in 1976, marked Detroit’s 324th birthday with a series of posts on social media highlighting her connection to the city and addressing key community issues.

On July 24, 2025, Tlaib posted: “Happy 324th Birthday, Detroit!

Proud to share a birthday with the city that raised me. To the most beautiful, Blackest city in the country: you taught me to speak truth to power and never back down. I will never stop fighting for you.”

Later that day, she addressed Black Maternal Mental Health Week, writing: “This Black Maternal Mental Health Week, you are not alone. Mental health is a leading cause of maternal mortality.

The Congressional Mamas’ Caucus and advocates from @BirthDetroit @MomJustice, and the Michigan Chamber for Reproductive Justice are here to help.” The tweet highlights ongoing efforts by local organizations to address maternal mental health disparities.

On July 25, Tlaib recognized the loss of two members of Detroit’s Black trans community during Detroit Black Pride week: “We lost two beloved Black trans women from Detroit this year. Tahiry Broom and Karmin Wells. Their lives, full of light, resilience, and joy, were cut short by violence. We honor them this Detroit Black Pride week by demanding justice and protecting all trans lives.”

Tlaib has served in Congress since 2019 after replacing Brenda Jones and previously served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. She continues to reside in Detroit and is an alumna of Wayne State University (BA) and Thomas M. Cooley Law School (JD).
