Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, has announced new legislative efforts to address basement flooding and related public health concerns for families across the country.

On July 25, 2025, Tlaib posted on her social media account: “Too many families across the country can’t get FEMA assistance for damaged basements after devastating floods.

I introduced the Fix Our Flooded Basements Act to require FEMA to finally cover the cost of basement repairs that if not addressed, can lead to mold exposure and more.”

In a subsequent post on the same day, she highlighted ongoing challenges faced by residents in her district: “Our families are struggling two years after the last district wide flooding. Their basements now have mold causing concerns over public health.

Tlaib also shared a link to a full press release about her legislative proposal: “You can read the full press release here https://t.co/c4XkuNSl5Z” (July 25, 2025).

Rashida Tlaib has represented Michigan’s 12th District in Congress since 2019, succeeding Brenda Jones. Before joining Congress, she served in the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014. Born and raised in Detroit, Tlaib earned her undergraduate degree from Wayne State University and a law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.

The proposed Fix Our Flooded Basements Act aims to expand Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance so that homeowners can receive support for repairing flood-damaged basements—a measure intended to address long-term issues such as mold growth and associated health risks.
