Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who represents Michigan’s 12th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently posted a series of statements on social media addressing issues related to Social Security, Indigenous land rights, and environmental protections.

On August 19, 2025, Tlaib wrote: “Social Security checks are earned. Now they are at risk. We rallied to demand that Congress protects what our seniors and families have worked hard for. Protect our checks.”

Later that same day, she commented on Oak Flat, a site significant to several Indigenous tribes: “Oak Flat is a sacred site to nine Indigenous tribes. The Trump admin wants to hand it over to a major mining company that would destroy it. We stand with our Indigenous nations and say NO to giveaways that pollute our public lands and waters.”

On August 20, 2025, Tlaib addressed environmental justice concerns: “We have the right to breathe clean air no matter what zip code we live in. Environmental justice groups and I stood together to make it clear we are opposed to the Trump Admin making cuts to the EPA, removing protections for public lands and waters, and rolling back critical”

Tlaib has served as the representative for Michigan’s 12th District since 2019 after replacing Brenda Jones in Congress. Before her tenure in Congress, she was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 through 2014. Born in Detroit in 1976 and currently residing there, Tlaib holds degrees from Wayne State University (BA) and Thomas M. Cooley Law School (JD).

Her recent posts highlight ongoing debates about federal support programs like Social Security as well as controversies regarding land use decisions affecting Indigenous communities and environmental policy changes under previous presidential administrations.
