Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, representing Michigan’s 12th district since 2019, recently addressed several pressing issues via her social media platform. Born in Detroit and an alumna of Wayne State University and Thomas M. Cooley Law School, Tlaib has been vocal on matters concerning free speech, healthcare, and international conflicts.

On May 8, 2025, Congresswoman Tlaib highlighted the challenges faced by students and faculty at the University of Michigan who are “speaking out against genocide.” She stated that they have encountered “threats, firings, and felony charges,” but emphasized their resilience in not backing down. Tlaib asserted that “free speech doesn’t end on campus” and voiced her opposition to what she described as “selective repression.”

Later that day, Tlaib brought attention to a critical issue in the American healthcare system. She noted that “every year, 60,000 Americans die because they can’t afford health insurance.” This statement underscores her ongoing advocacy for healthcare reform.

In another post on the same day, Tlaib called for urgent action regarding the situation in Kashmir. She urged the U.S. to use its influence to halt bombings and deescalate tensions to save lives. Emphasizing the right of Kashmiris to self-determination and safety, she remarked that “nothing is solved with bombs” and stressed the importance of acknowledging “the millions of Kashmiris yearning to live in peace and dignity.”

Rashida Tlaib has served in Congress since replacing Brenda Jones in 2019. Before this role, she was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 2009 to 2014.
