Contract pharmaceutical ingredient maker Piramal Pharma Solutions plans to invest $35 million to expand its operations in Riverview.
The project includes the demolition of an existing building on the property, then the build-out of 25,000 square feet of manufacturing, warehousing and laboratory space.
The investment is expected to create 31 jobs and is supported by a $200,000 grant from the Jobs Ready Michigan, according to a memo from the Michigan Economic Development Corp., to pay for on-the-job training and recruiting efforts.
“The company has experienced difficulty hiring its highly technical roles which consist of analytical chemists, quality assurance specialists and R&D scientists,” the memo said. “Sourcing these experienced professionals in these job categories is a significant challenge as there are very few life sciences organizations in Southeast Michigan. This forces the Company to draw from other regions and states, incurring significant relocation and professional recruiting expenses.”

Piramal Pharma, a subsidiary of India conglomerate Piramal Group, employs roughly 145 at its Riverview location. It also has operations in Lexington, Ky.; Sellersville, Pa.; Aurora, Canada; Grangemouth and Morpeth in the U.K.; and eight sites in India.
Piramal Pharma acquired the U.S. operations, including Riverview, from Ash Stevens LLC in a $43 million deal in 2016. The Riverview location focuses on development and production of highly-potent active pharmaceutical ingredients. Examples of these ingredients range from cytotoxic compounds to hormones like estrogen.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer applauded the announcement.
“Piramal Pharma Solutions’ decision to expand in Southeast Michigan will create good-paying jobs for our talented workforce,” Whitmer said in a news release. “Their expansion underscores the strength of Michigan’s business climate and continued leadership in manufacturing across industry sectors. This is great news for workers and their families as we continue our economic jumpstart and put Michigan back to work.”
